Why it is called BIG GAME?
This project uses the concept of game. Whether it is virtual computer games or actual games played in the real world, people need to obey rules, and these rules direct their behaviors and reactions. If someone breaks the rules, the game will be over. Games fulfill the wishes of players that they cannot achieve in daily life.
Big Game. It is not just a question. It is my observations of life. It is a feeling accumulated in my head day by day. Growing up is an irreversible process in everyone’s life, step by step. All the things in my thought that used to be far away now hit me one by one. Go to junior high school, high school, college, look for internship, get a job…die. Everything is in order. Different people do different things at the same time, different people appear in a place they should be or exist in the place they think they should be. The world rotates in an orderly fashion.
Every time I think about the relationship between the running of the world and individual existence, I place myself in the position of a spectator, and I am astonished that everything appears in the right time, neither early nor late. Everything is perfectly calculated like a game. Is the world we exist in a game? If so, who creates the game and manipulates us, such that we are willing to obey the rules? People like to play games. In a computer game, we accomplish missions which are different from real life by manipulating the virtual figure; the virtual figure is a projection of ourselves. So who are we projecting? Who manipulates us in the back and gets the satisfaction?
So the eternal question in my project is who directs us, what manipulates everything. It is involves in the different facets of daily life.
Look Left and Look Right
In this work, I thought about how the change of social environment affects our daily life.
The development of communication equipments and social media is so fast, like the appearance and update of iPhones, iPads, iWatches, Google, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr. Life seems more interesting than before because of the continually changing appearance of new things. People also seem busier than ever because they need to keep following the latest trends. For example, we receive so many emails everyday. We check our inbox every time when we hear the beep, in case miss something important, no matter where we are or what we’re doing in the moment. Our friends upload hundreds of new photos and articles on Facebook, and we are used to checking them unconsciously. It seems like that it has become a part of our daily life. At the same time, we acquit the latest news at any place at any time. There is no distance between the latest thing and ourselves. We are used to the scattered time to read the fragments of information and we convince ourselves to get what we want from them. What do we get, finally? How has our life changed with the influence of tons of new things? What is the meaning of the action of looking left and right? It is an interesting behavior, but, what does it mean? Maybe it is a metaphor of the status of our modern life.!
I am Yuqi Wang. My observations of daily life concentrate on subtle changes and pivotal outcomes: subdued moments; futile effort, monotonous routine, insurmountable distance between people in society. I think about how society and environment affect people physically and psychologically.
