About Nate

Nate Hook has been described as "A tried and true proponent of the thick, muscular, heavier-than-heavyweight school of tenor saxophone" by All About Jazz. This band was started as a vehicle to play exclusively Nate's original compositions. After months of rehearsal, the band began performing regularly in October of 2013. In the fall of 2014, a 3 track EP was recorded, and in the summer of 2015 a full length album was recorded. This album, called PROGRESSIVE OVERLOAD, is due out in 2016.

The compositions draw on a variety of influences. Nate's study with Gary Thomas can be heard in the chord progressions, study of the compositions of the classical composer Krzysztof Penderecki can also be heard in several of the tracks. Rhythmic ideas from the M-BASE movement, and contemporary jazz artists like Vijay Iyer and Tyshawn Sorey are often used in conjunction with timbres and grooves commonly associated with R&B and rock music as well. These compositions were consistently developed by the same band of young virtuosos over the past two years through rehearsal and performance to the point of developing a band sound.
