Margaret's profile

Margaret Rorison is filmmaker, projectionist, educator, and curator from Baltimore, MD.  Her work aims to support and preserve contemporary filmmakers and film culture.  Her current work focuses on portraiture, memory, and the precarity and beauty of nature. Her work has been exhibited at Anthology Film Archives, Miami PULSE Art Fair, Microscope Gallery, The Museum of The Moving Image, The National Gallery of Art, and The Walker Art Center. Her short films have shown at festivals including The Ann Arbor Film Festival, Edinburgh International Film Festival, Images Festival, SF CROSSROADS, Open City Documentary Film Festival, & Mono No Aware Cinema Arts Festival.  Her short film, vinmdøller (2014) won The ORWO Award for Best Cinematography at the 53rd Annual Ann Arbor Film Festival, and her short film, Memory of August (2016) won the "Special Jury Award" in the Experimental Shorts Category at the 28th Annual New Orleans Film Festival.  Rorison is a recipient of a 2016 Rubys Artist Project Grants, a recipient of the 2019 and 2016 Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Awards and 2021 and 2022 Maryland State Arts Council Creativity Grants. 
 
She is currently working on a short 16mm film that documents a collaborative hybrid puppet show performance that took place in September 2022 at CPM Gallery in Bolton Hill, and working with Baltimore native, Lawrence Burney to film a personal documentary and portrait of Baltimore City. 

From 2012-2022, she directed Sight Unseen Screening Series, an experimental film series that brought contemporary filmmakers and curators to Baltimore to present their work. The series brought over 50 notable filmmakers, curators, and artists to Baltimore to present their work and formed partnerships with various Baltimore-based organizations including, The Baltimore School for The Arts, Current Space, Enoch Pratt Library, Johns Hopkins University, Maryland Institute College of Art, The Baltimore Museum of Art, The Creative Alliance, The SNF Parkway Theatre, & The Red Room Collective.
 
Rorison also works as an audiovisual specialist for the Film Programs at The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and will be starting a full time lecturer position at Towson University in Fall of 2023. She received her BA from UMD, College Park in Creative Writing and Spanish Literature, and an MFA in Photographic & Electronic Media from MICA.
